Starting from July 1, 2023, Mastercard will be phasing out Maestro debit cards in the Netherlands, offering a new and improved system called Debit Mastercard. This new card will provide cardholders with more options and benefits, such as the ability to use it at over 80 million acceptance points worldwide and complete online transactions without relying on platforms such as iDEAL.

V PAY debit cards will also be replaced by Visa Debit cards, although no official date has been set yet.

The Switch to Mastercard and Visa Debit: What it Means for You For those who hold bank accounts in the Netherlands, the switch to Debit Mastercard and Visa Debit will be a seamless process. Banks have already been given the option to switch to the new debit cards, but only a few, like Rabobank, have made the transition so far.

Once your current Maestro or V PAY debit card expires or you need a replacement card, your bank will send you a Mastercard Debit card starting July 1. Until then, you can still use your existing Maestro or V PAY card at terminals and ATMs in the Netherlands.

In conclusion, the switch to Debit Mastercard and Visa Debit in the Netherlands will bring numerous benefits and more options to users, while still being a hassle-free process.
